On October 7th, 2023, terrorists from Hamas and other extremist groups carried out a massacre in Israel, prompting a broad offensive. Since then, a humanitarian crisis has been unfolding in the Gaza Strip before the eyes of the world. People on the ground are in mortal danger due to military operations, lack of humanitarian aid, collapsed medical care, and resulting illnesses and hunger. Caritas is doing everything possible to help. By April 2024, we distributed food parcels to 113,000 households; over 11,000 families received mattresses, mats, and blankets, while more than 15,000 families were supplied with tarpaulins or tents. Our aid workers in Gaza are delivering emergency medical aid and psychological first aid. Today, as in the past, we continue to call for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, protection for civilians, and improved access to humanitarian aid.
Earthquakes: From Emergency Aid to Reconstruction
Violent earthquakes struck Syria and Turkey in February 2023. Together with our regional partner organizations, we provided immediate emergency aid including food, hygiene packages, drinking water, emergency shelters, mattresses, blankets, and cash assistance. Disaster relief is a race against time - rapid provision of supplies is vital for those impacted. To this day, we continue to help those affected on the ground to restore their livelihoods. We promote educational programs and offer psychological assistance.
Life After the Earthquakes: Farah and Hakim
The devastating earthquakes in Syria and Turkey have completely changed the lives of Farah, Hakim, and their families. They are unable to return to their homes, as living there is no longer possible. Currently, they are residing in a Caritas school in Aleppo, which has been converted into an emergency shelter.
