Concerns in Austria Surge Amid Ukraine War Outbreak

The outbreak of the war in Ukraine has sparked significant concern in Austria, prompting Caritas to take swift action. The organization has established emergency shelters, daycare centers, basic service facilities, and food distributions for displaced individuals in Austria. Furthermore, Caritas provides integration and counseling services, including a nationwide hotline that offers legal advice to those affected by the war and their loved ones.

After the initial weeks, our attention has turned towards addressing the long-term prospects of those displaced by the conflict. At the political level, our primary commitment is to ensure that displaced people have unrestricted access to the labor market and are able to work and earn additional income within the basic service system.

Addressing Long-Term Prospects

Looking ahead to 2023, our focus will remain on providing long-term opportunities for displaced persons from Ukraine. This includes initiatives such as long-term education or vocational training, as well as facilitating the often time-consuming validation process of foreign qualifications. Additionally, we strongly advocate for displaced Ukrainians to be eligible for social assistance.

At Caritas, we also assist individuals from various countries who are seeking to reintegrate into their home country. In addition, we collaborate as a project partner with Netzwerk AsylAnwält*innen (Asylum Advocates Network) to support third-country nationals and people with protection status in establishing themselves in the Austrian labor market, with a particular emphasis on nursing training.

Aid Services for Ukrainians Across Austria

Following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, thousands of refugees arrived in Austria. Caritas has set up aid services for the displaced throughout Austria. At Vienna's main train station, for example, displaced people receive warm tea, a bed for the first few nights, blankets, and food. In 2022, Caritas housed more than 2,500 Ukrainians in facilities providing basic services.

Refugees from Ukraine talk about their arrival at the main train station in Vienna in the video below.
