Caritas Responds to Growing Poverty

In 2022, inflation is causing poverty rates to rise in Austria. Nearly one in seven adults are struggling to afford their everyday living costs due to high prices.

As a result, our Caritas social counseling centers were operating at full capacity in 2022. Initially, it was a real challenge for us to handle the high volume of requests. However, thanks to your generous donations, we have been able to maintain and even expand our assistance in some cases.

Online assistance is just one example of our efforts. In 2022, we launched the Caritas Wegweiser (Caritas Guide), which provides an overview of need-based aid services and an anonymous digital counseling service.

Helping People in Need, No Matter How They Connect with Us!

We provide assistance with outstanding rent, heating, and electricity bills to prevent people affected by poverty, such as low-income earners, single parents, and minimum pensioners, from falling into a cycle of poverty. Our food distributions and social markets also alleviate the burden on many individuals.

Women are especially vulnerable to poverty. Our emergency shelters, mother and child shelters, and women's housing projects provide a warm and safe accommodation for women and children in need. We also offer counseling, baby food, diapers, and warm clothing for the winter to support them during their stay.

While politicians have acknowledged the situation, many of the measures put in place only provide temporary relief. As Caritas, we therefore continue to emphasize the need for a poverty-proof and sustainable social system.

A Private Apartment for Wilfried K.

Wilfried lost his job and ended up homeless. Even small expenses are a significant burden for him, and rising prices have a severe impact on his situation. His greatest wish is to have his own four walls, but he cannot afford to rent an apartment on the open housing market. Caritas is helping him to make his dream come true.

Watch the video below to hear Wilfried K. share his story.

"It's not just about the broken fridge anymore. About 90 percent of our clients can no longer afford their daily living costs."
