Hello and welcome!

I am delighted that you have come across our digital Annual Report for 2022. I am Michael Landau, and I am addressing you from the Caritas Austria office on Storchengasse in Vienna. However, Caritas is actively engaged in numerous locations, both within Austria and around the world. But what matters most is that we are always present where people in distress need help.

The year 2022 has been truly exceptional for all of us, marked by a significant surge in the need for assistance. Not least, the war in Ukraine has turned the world upside down.

In Ukraine, despite the immense challenges, we are able to provide immediate and effective assistance. This is made possible by generous donations from Austria and our network of partners on the ground. Our dedicated colleagues, sometimes even operating from bomb shelters, organize emergency shelters, provide warm clothing, food, first aid, and conduct evacuations. Caritas is also actively assisting in neighboring countries. In Austria as well, Caritas extends its support to refugees, ensuring they find hope and a path towards a better future.

The impact of the war is felt globally. Caritas serves as the last safety net for many people in Austria, especially amidst the current cost-of-living crisis. Furthermore, in the world's poorest countries, Caritas is present, providing aid to those in need and offering long-term support, empowering them to lead better lives.

Thousands of volunteers continue to support us in 2022, through initiatives such as "Pfarrcaritas" (Caritas in the parishes), youngCaritas, or our community for humanity called "fuereinand." Many people make donations, both on specific occasions and regularly, while numerous companies also reach out to us, assuming responsibility and making meaningful contributions. The overwhelming cohesion displayed within our country is truly remarkable, and I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude for it.

This Annual Report showcases the collective achievements we have accomplished in so many places throughout the year. It also demonstrates our potential for future endeavors, as well as what still needs to be done, including policy measures, to prevent hardship and poverty. And above all, this report reveals one thing: that even in challenging times, humanity serves as our ultimate compass.
